PhD – Chemical and Process Engineering at University of Leeds (2016)

MSc – Chemical Engineering at University of Leeds (2012)

BSc – Chemical Engineering at Ankara University (2011)

Dr. Öksel obtained her MSc and PhD in Chemical Engineering from Leeds University, where she spent six months as a Post-Doctoral Research Fellow investigating the toxicological risks of engineered nanomaterials. Her PhD work was part of three EU-funded FP7 projects, namely, MARINA, SUN and NanoReg, each involving over 20 EU partners. The focus of her research as a PhD researcher was multivariate statistical studies into the human and environmental toxicology effects of nanomaterials. Her PhD viva examination has been graded outstanding.

In 2017, she joined Imperial College London as Post-Doctoral Research Associate and worked as part of a multidisciplinary research team consisting of data scientists, statisticians and clinicians with interest in implementing machine learning models to understand the progression of diseases from childhood to adulthood. In 2019, she has joined IYTE Bioengineering Department as a recipient of the TÜBİTAK 2232 International Fellowship for Outstanding Researchers, where she currently works as an Assistant Professor.

Over the last 10 years, she has been engaged in various forms of teaching (e.g. lecturer, academic tutor, training course facilitator/speaker, MSc/PhD supervisor) and administrative activities (such as departmental representative for research fellows, staff supporter, personal, scientific mentor, the academic assessor in various panels, etc.) and involved in outreach work designed to help academically-talented disadvantaged students achieve their potential through the Social Mobility Foundation. She is currently teaching core engineering modules such as Mass and Energy Transfer and Thermodynamics and leading a group of 6 postgraduate researchers focusing on different aspects of nanotoxicology.

Post-doctoral Fellows

Dr. Aysel TOMAK

ayseltomak@iyte.edu.tr

PhD – Material Science and Engineering at İzmir Institute of Technology (2020)

MSc – Nanotechnology at Gediz University (2013)

MSc – Chemistry at Celal Bayar University (2009)

BSc – Chemistry at Celal Bayar University (2008)

Dr. Aysel completed her undergraduate education in Chemistry. Afterwards, she obtained her MSc degree in the Department of Nanotechnology, focusing on biosensors. She completed her PhD thesis on “Development of Plasmonic Nanostructures for Photothermal Therapy of Prostate and Breast Cancer” in Izmir Institute of Technology, Department of Materials Science and Engineering in January 2020. During her MSc and PhD, she took part in many interdisciplinary TUBITAK projects. Her PhD thesis was on synthesizing gold nanorods and lipid stabilized nanobubbles containing gold nanorods and investigating the potential of these plasmonic nanostructures as photothermal therapy agents for breast and prostate cancer through in vitro cell culture experiments. In March 2021, she started working as a postdoctoral researcher in the TÜBİTAK 2232 project run by Dr. Ceyda Öksel Karakuş in the Department of Bioengineering. Currently, she continues her post-doctoral studies with research on nanomaterial-protein corona interactions and in vitro assessments, extending her expertise on nanomaterial synthesis, dispersion and physicochemical characterization, which she acquired during her doctoral studies.

MSc – Medical Biology at Ege University (2020)

BSc – Genetics and Bioengineering at Yeditepe University (2017)

Selin received her undergraduate degree from the department of Genetics and Bioengineering (Yeditepe University) and her thesis was focused on nanoparticles in cosmetic products. In 2017, she joined Ege University, medical biology department for her master’s degree. During Msc., she studied the effect of several agents on different cancer cell lines and graduated with a thesis entitled “Combination of resveratrol and BIBR1532 inhibits proliferation of colon cancer cells by repressing expression of LncRNAs”. Besides her thesis studies, she published three different papers focusing mainly on cancer research. After completing her master’s degree, she joined the TÜBİTAK 2232 project at Iztech where she is currently working as a PhD student in BioNanoLab. Since 2020, she has been working on the cytotoxic effects of different types of bionanomaterials on different cell lines via assessing reactive oxygen species (ROS) formation, membrane integrity, and mitochondrial activity.
